Shown above are some radio units from World War II that were my inspiration for the large shipment appearing in the middle of "Lovers & Comrades." The unit on the left is one half of a paired set named "Joan" and "Eleanor." It was designed to fit inside someone's coat. The dipole antenna is expandable and the radio communicated information to its paired unit, which was installed in the back of aircraft flying overhead.
